#FeminineHygiene Campaign: Addressing Period Poverty and Normalizing Menstruation
The #FeminineHygiene Campaign by PUKAPS is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing period poverty and normalizing menstruation in public discourse. At the heart of this campaign is the #FreePad in Public Spaces initiative, which seeks to provide free sanitary pads in public locations across Solo, Indonesia. This initiative is not only about access to menstrual products but also about raising awareness, breaking taboos, and ensuring that menstruation is seen as a normal part of life rather than a source of shame or stigma.
First #FreePad Station: Pioneering Menstrual Hygiene in Solo
The campaign launched its first #FreePad station at Kulonuwun Kopi Saka Omah Sinten, a popular coffee shop in Solo, making it the pioneer location to host this essential resource.
This station offers free sanitary pads to customers and the general public, ensuring that anyone in need can access menstrual hygiene products without fear of embarrassment or financial burden.
This first step marks the beginning of a larger movement to expand the availability of free menstrual products in coffee shops, libraries, community centers, and other public spaces throughout the city.
Raising Awareness and Breaking Menstrual Taboos
In addition to distributing free pads, the #FeminineHygiene Campaign aims to educate the public on menstruation as a health issue and a gender equality concern. The campaign encourages conversations around menstrual health, aiming to dismantle the cultural taboos that surround periods.
By placing free pads in public places, PUKAPS sends a strong message: menstruation should not be hidden, and access to menstrual hygiene products is a basic right.
Expanding the #FreePad Initiative: Collaboration and Growth
As part of the campaign’s growth, PUKAPS plans to collaborate with local businesses and community spaces to install more #FreePad stations throughout Solo. A map showcasing the current and future locations of these stations will be featured on the PUKAPS website. Visitors to the website will be able to explore and find nearby coffee shops and venues offering free pads, promoting inclusivity and awareness across the city.

Contributing to Cultural Change: Supporting Menstruators and Promoting Gender Equality
By offering this service, PUKAPS not only provides immediate help to menstruators in need but also contributes to a broader cultural shift. The #FeminineHygiene Campaign is part of PUKAPS’ larger mission to promote gender equality, health education, and women’s empowerment. Through this initiative, PUKAPS aims to alleviate period poverty, foster greater awareness of menstrual health, and create a more supportive community for menstruators everywhere.
